Interviewing Managers
Target Objectives
- Describe the establishment's processes, practices, and policies
- Identify recent illness or notable events that might have occurred around the time of the outbreak
Strategic Check
Before leaving the office
- Obtain a paper or electronic copy of a manager interview questionnaire
- Obtain a multilingual copy of the questionnaire, if applicable
- Review and familiarize yourself with the questions
- Review the outbreak information - illness onset, symptomatology, incubation period, etiology (if known)
- Review confidentiality and investigation policies
- Plan to conduct the interview during off-times between peak business hours
- Schedule a time to have their full, undivided attention. May not be possible if immediate action is warranted
At the site
- Identify a general manager and/or owner
- Introduce yourself and explain the purpose of the interview
- Find a private place at the establishment to conduct the interview (i.e. manager's office, outside table, loading dock)
During the interview
- Explain how the information gained during the interviews will be used
- Inquire about the following information (if applicable):
- Unusual events around the time of the outbreak
- Complaints around the time of the outbreak
- Employee schedules and timesheets
- Sick leave policy
- Food handling policies (i.e. hand washing, glove use)
- Required food safety courses or certifications
After the interview
- Provide your contact information
- Inform them that you may contact them if and when additional information necessitates follow-up
- Inform the owner/manager of processes and planned actions:
- Making observations
- Reviewing records
- Interviewing food handlers
