Contributing Factors and Environmental Antecedents
Target Objectives
- Use findings from the site visit to identify contributing factors
- Relate the contributing factors to the root causes by identifying environmental antecedents
Strategic Check
- Review interviews, food flow diagrams, records review, sampling results, etc.
- Based on your findings, identify contributing factors directly related to the outbreak and the transmission of disease
- Use the IAFP Keys (download in Toolkit) or similar resources to relate your findings to commonly associated pathogens and food handling practices
- Use the contributing factors to help determine the underlying environmental antecedents
- Compile the findings and organize them into a flow chart of events to present to your team
Tips
- Remain focused on factors directly related to the current outbreak. Leave the non-critical violations for a different time, such as a routine inspection
- The more specific the contributing factors and environmental antecedents, the easier it will be to implement targeted control measures
